7 Questions to Ask Before Hiring an HVAC Contractor

Ask about licensing, diagnosis, written estimates, equipment selection, permits, warranties, and installation verification so you can compare proposals with confidence.

A good HVAC proposal explains the work, not just a price. Ask these seven questions before approving a repair or new system, and compare the answers in writing.

1. Are you licensed and insured for this work?

Ask for the applicable Texas HVAC license information and verify it with the state licensing authority. Clarify who will perform and supervise the job and what insurance applies.

2. What is the diagnosis?

For a repair, ask which part or condition caused the symptom and how it was confirmed. For replacement, ask what current comfort problem the proposal solves. A system's age alone is not a diagnosis.

3. What does the written estimate include?

Request itemized equipment and labor, any duct or electrical work, disposal, permit costs, and conditions that might change the price. Compare the same scope across bids.

4. How was the equipment selected?

Ask how capacity and system type were chosen for the home, whether ducts and airflow were assessed, and whether indoor and outdoor components are compatible. Bigger is not always better.

5. Who handles permits and inspections?

Ask which local permits apply to the proposed work, who obtains them, and how inspections will be scheduled. Requirements depend on the job and jurisdiction.

6. What do the warranties cover?

Separate manufacturer parts coverage from contractor labor coverage. Ask about registration, exclusions, who handles future service, and what you would pay if a repair is needed.

7. How will you verify the result?

Ask how airflow, operation, and comfort will be checked at completion and what documentation you will receive. For an existing problem, agree on what successful resolution looks like.

If a contractor pressures you to decide before answering, take time to compare written proposals. See our installation information or call (210) 985-8048 to discuss your home's needs.
